One guy gets his somewhere in Detroit, but I think its coke not coal. Or just show up at a meeting and ask questions.
Great bunch of people with a LOT more talent than I've got. Chad, if you are ever over closer to the west side of Michigan, call Steve P. He has a semi load of coal in 50 lb bags for sale. PM me for his phone number, or search on eBay for coal, or matchlessantiques and you can get his contact info.
What about this place in Ohio called Dennis Farms? I was thinking about heading down there today to grab some. I have to call in the morning to see if they have it in bags or if I have to drive a truck down there but a few places on the net refer to that place as having really good soft coal. Are they pretty welcoming to newbies? Thanks again Chad.
Hey Chad, Most of us were newbies once. I was nervous the first time but found out that it's just a bunch of people that share the same common interests. Being prejudiced, I think we have one of the best newsletters out there too. I spent 2 years as a member before I went to a meeting, before that all I did was read the newsletter. We meet all over the state so I don't always make it to every meeting or sometimes we share rides.
If you have more questions you can PM me or find me on facebook on the anvil blacksmithing. Hope you find your coal! Thanks Jeff! I appreciate the encouragement and I'll think seriously about joining the organization. Trying to re-open this thread to see if anything has changed. The first step when shopping for coal is to know what type you need.
Anthracite is the hardest, high-grade coal that generates a hot blue flame when it is burned. The majority of anthracite in the U. It was heavily produced and mined in the late s and early s. Anthracite has become more difficult to mine because the remaining reserves are deeper and deeper underground.
Anthracite is ideal for generating heat in coal-burning furnaces in homes or small businesses. Not only does anthracite burn hotter than other coals, but it also burns more slowly and is the most efficient heat producer relative to its weight. Anthracite is the cleanest burning coal, and when used properly in modern furnaces will require little cleaning.
Anthracite comes in several sizes, as shown below. The larger the pieces of coal, the higher the price. Be sure to check the instructions on your stove to confirm which size is appropriate. Bituminous coal is reducing quality and much easier to mine than anthracite. Normally, it is burned to create electricity and run trains. It is coal that is also used to create coke and to make iron and steel.
Anthracite is not mostly used for blacksmithing this is because distinct from bituminous coal; anthracite produces a little amount of coke that has a tendency to blow up and out of the fire. Because of this, bituminous coal is suitable for blacksmithing.
Blacksmith coal used in forges is high-grade bituminous coal, though some forges may use coke or charcoal. Geologically, it is the youngest category of coal. As was pointed out by the Lignite Energy Council, about 79 percent of lignite coal is used to create electricity and Lignite produces little heat compared to its weight and compared to other coals, so it is typically used to produce power in plants near the mine.
Because only a little percentage is utilized domestically normally for heating or fertilizer , lignite is not listed in our list of coal suppliers and dealers. Coal slag is the byproduct of coal that is burned to generate power. It can be made into blasting abrasives that are finer and safer than silica sand which is another most use blasting abrasive. People who produce this material clean the slag and sort it by size — medium, fine, and additional ally fine — before selling to people.
Abrasive blasting includes the use of high pressure to boost abrasive material, such as coal slag, on a surface either to smooth a rough ground, roughen a smooth surface, or to even clean the surface. You buy coal, it is either from local hardware or supply stores, blacksmithing stores, or in some situations, directly from the producer. Coal at hardware stores is mostly sold in or pound bags.
